[转贴] Amazon 4Q Profit Declines As Spending Spree Continues

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) reported a 58% decline in fourth-quarter profit Tuesday, as the online retail company pushes ahead with heavy spending and a dramatic expansion at the expense of margins.

Amazon said net income for the quarter ended in December fell to $177 million, or 38 cents a share, from $416 million, or 91 cents a share in the same period a year earlier. Revenue rose 35% to $17.43 billion.
Wall Street analysts had expected Amazon to report earnings of 17 cents a share for the quarter, which includes the important holiday-shopping season, and $18.25 billion in revenue.

Shares of Amazon fell 8.8% to $177.27 in late trading.

Amazon itself had projected a wide range of between $16.45 billion and $18.65 billion in revenue for the period, while cautioning that investments in areas such as its new Kindle Fire tablet computer and facilities might put a damper on profitability.

Benchmark analyst Daniel Kurnos said Amazon's revenue result was " disappointing," as was its outlook for the current quarter.

"The lack of upside going forward could be an issue, and could be hampering the stock," Kurnos said. However, the analyst said Amazon's margins weren't as bad as had been feared.
