Moammar Gadhafi Shouts Defiance While Libya Burns

Moammar Gadhafi, in a long and often surreal televised speech, offered defiance and bluster to the Libyan people who are rising against him and to foreign countries that he blamed for the uprising.
Gadhafi, who appeared very animated throughout his speech, blamed "rats" and "foreign agents" for the rebellion, at one point claiming the rebels were really a small group of youths who had been given "hallucination pills" to incite them to attack some police stations.
Gadhafi also invoked other cases where governments had used deadly force to deal with unrest, including the Branch Davidian siege in Waco, Texas, and the Chinese massacre of students in Tiananmen Square. It was unknown why he thought these other actions somehow justified his violent reaction to the Libyan uprising. The FBI and the Chinese Army were harshly criticized for the events in Waco and Beijing, respectively.
Gadhafi gave the obligatory vow to become a martyr, if necessary, and to fight to the last drop of his blood. If he remains on Libyan soil much longer, he may get his wish.
It is clear that Libya has devolved into chaos, with Army units defecting, gun battles taking place in the streets of Libyan cities and Libyan Air Force planes dropping bombs on civilian targets. As the death toll rises and the bodies begin to pile up, it might not be a question of if but when the over four decades' old Gadhafi regime ends.
The Western world, especially the U.S., has reacted with great passivity to the events in Libya. A meeting will take place in a closed door session of the U.N. Security Council, but it is unknown what if anything that body would be disposed to do.
The U.S. has the power to intervene, imposing a no-fly zone over Libya to stop the bombing of civilians and providing humanitarian aid. So far, the Obama administration has chosen to do nothing, aside from a tepid reaction that has been termed "pathetic."
Libya has every potential to be a wealthy, prosperous country given competent leadership and plenty of foreign investment. It has huge oil reserves. Libya also has beautiful beaches and enough Roman ruins to attract regiments of tourists, given the infrastructure to support them and a friendly government to welcome them. It is a testimony to the misrule of Gadhafi that, despite these advantages, Libya has remained in Third World squalor for the past four decades. Will whatever government that replaces him be any better? That remains to be seen. But so far the U.S. especially is punting away any opportunity it has to influence events on the ground. |
