10 points is OK. just don't drive any more. I knew someone got 10 points before and did get driver license suspended. But he is now OK and happily driving. 2 points/year is reduced automatically, if I recall correctly.

if you live in NJ, probably you can exchange double fine for 4 points, you plead guilty and request bargain, the court can change your violation to "careless driving", the first and second violation for "careless driving" in 5 years has no point but with a bigger fine. to do so make sure you've done no more than twice (including this time), as the third time for "careless driving" is 4 points with big fines too.
